Had surgery and have an allergic reaction to the bandage adhesive used. How do I relieve the welts and itching?

I had a c-section a week ago. The surgeon used internal stitches and glue to close so no staples but I have steri-strips now for another week. When I initially came out of surgery I had a huge elastic bandage dressing over the wound for 24 hours and it was removed leaving the steri-strips behind. Over the past week the area has become itchier and itchier. I have a welt in the same shape as the elastic bandage.

With previous surgeries I have had allergic reactions to adhesives but this time I completely forgot to mention it. What can I do to relieve it? Its so incredibly itchy and unbearable. Ive tried cortisone cream, Ive removed all the remaining adhesive I can see on my skin, and nothing is working. I finally resorted to Vagisil just to numb the area (it has benzocaine in it).

HELP! Its really unbearable. And Im terrified to scratch anywhere near it because its right at the incision site. Advice?Had surgery and have an allergic reaction to the bandage adhesive used. How do I relieve the welts and itching?
I use Aloe Vera gel. It is great for any type of sunburn, scrape, irritation of the skin etc. It is healing also.

You've already removed all the adhesive (with alcohol swabs).

Hydro-cortisone doesn't work (and that would be the first thing a doctor would tell you). Benzocaine is barely helping you.

Seems the only thing you haven't tried is Calamine Lotion.

I would call the doctor's office and insist he/she see you. You are wise not to scratch near the incision site because you can infect yourself with bacteria on your hands and nails (this happened to a coworker of mine). Don't fool around with this and get treated with something that works and really helps you to endure this.Had surgery and have an allergic reaction to the bandage adhesive used. How do I relieve the welts and itching?
my blisters where SHINGLES. i was itching and breaking out from the adheseive even the hypo allergic kind i used rubbing alcohol to remove the sticky residue used benedryl cream hydrocortison 1 % so then mine started burning and stinging so you go on valtrex, so make sure you don't have a STAPH infection which will be MRSA so see a DR STAT
you could as you mentioned before be experience an allergic reaction to latex which isn't uncommon or life threatening for some people but not for others it all depends on how you react to it and whether it causes any other issues or not including labored breathing, skin turning blue (cyanosis), racing heart, sweaty skin and whatnot

but getting back to a remedy there are a more then a couple i would look into ( 5 ) at least w/ explanations to back up my logic

hydrogen peroxide (rubbing alcohol) - if you have ever had any kind of itchy skin caused by poison ivy it helps to dry out the skin where the poison ivy is located which tends to leak a certain pus when you scratch only spreading it even more but with the help of hydrogen peroxide it will help contain and hopefully clear up the itchyness

chloraseptic spray - usually used for people with sore throats or mouth sores this helps to numb the site on contact making it feel wierd for about an hour and a half maybe longer if you don't drink anything afterwards to allow it to work perhaps if you spray it on the lesion it could possibly numb the skin where the welt is therefore making the pain a little less nerve wracking

any chance that baby powder might make it less of a problem besides giving you the scent of flowers it might help to coat the welt allowing the welt to gradually heal with time

another thing to do is treat it as an infection by washing it with warm water and antibacterial soap or if it hurts too much using a mild cleansing bar for the face made of glycerin w/ a mild fragrance
take some benadryl and lay down and that should work if not you need to go to the doctor/ hospital have a great day or night god bless
Don't laugh, but I would put this stuff called Petaseptic on it. It relieves itching. It is a mixture of glycerin, witch hazel and camphor. It is made for cats and dogs, but it safe for humans. I use it myself on any kind of bug bite (even chiggers and they itch like CrAzY). Maybe you can get someone to go to the pet store for you...otherwise, just mix it up yourself.. I'll include a link so they can see what the bottle looks like when they go to the store.

To slit the the band aid package open. Is it easier...no. Much easier and quicker to tear it open. Who has time to look for a little string when they are gushing blood all over the place.

HELP - I am allergic to bandage adhesive?

I have been allergic to latex for at least the last 10 years. This has made buying latex free bandages almost impossible until the last few years. Just recently (the last few weeks) I have developed an allergy to teh bandages I have been using that are latex free. The brand is Nexcare. Does anyone know of another brand of latex free bandages? I am at the point of not being able to use bandages. This is a problem since I don't heal well to begin with and usually require bandages for prolonged periods of time. Any help would be appreciated. I used to use paper towels and paper tape. I don't want to return to that. Thank you.HELP - I am allergic to bandage adhesive?
im in the same boat... i cannot wear any type of bandaid... im not even allergic to latex... if i have a cut that needs to be covered, i will wrap guaze around it.. then tape the guaze..i know it makes a small cut look big, but at least my skin wont be torn off by the bandaid.. you can also try to get some of that stuff they use in drs offices and hospitals, i forget the name, but you just wrap it around and it sticks to itself...HELP - I am allergic to bandage adhesive?
I've used some 'liquid bandage' stuff on some wounds - its a clear liquid that dries over the wound to seal it up:

http://tinyurl.com/2yn7ol

Sometimes I've also used rolled gauze bandage to tie pads over wounds. Lastly, I've used a Nexcare Transparent Bandage, as found here:

http://tinyurl.com/yqvuz4

But I found it kind of uncomfortable because it trapped in a lot of heat. Good luck, hope you find something that works.
check out band aids new skin it is not an adhesive but a liquid you put right on the wound, and then it seals it when it dries. check ingredients first but it is worth a try.
Please tell me that you are under the care of a good dermatologist! this is more than allergy. talk to him/her now!
you know, i am allergic to latex, and i know people who are allergic to the adhesive. all you can do it try the liquid bandage stuff (after you wash it well) and even though this may sound awful.... some people i know use super glue... but be careful it is horribly sticky!
Try using gauze and tape, or try liquid bandage.
use liquid bandage

How to get bandage adhesive off skin?

Rubbing alcohol works. How to get bandage adhesive off skin?
alcoholHow to get bandage adhesive off skin?
rubbing alcohol swap
Use lighter fluid on a cotton ball, then rub the marks left by the bandaid.
baby oil, or just soap and water with warm water on a washcloth, but i would try the baby oil first
Heat it with a hair dryer then rub it off or you can also use rubbing alcohol.
Never heard of the rubbing alcohol -- I have always used a good hand cream and it kinda dissolves it (lifts it off the skin and then I roll it off). That way, my skin is nice %26amp; soft afterwards.
a bit of baby oil or skin so soft by avon
Most medical bandage adhesive removers have acetone in them, so I would try over-the-counter nail polish remover. Just try to keep the stuff off any open wound as it might hurt. Just light scrub the area with a gauze with the remover on it. If the skin gets irritated, then stop and wait to do a little more the next day when the irritation has resolved.
Short answer - vegetable oil!
alcahol, whitchazel, any cream or oil.
Trying using alcohol.

  • Had a reaction to adhesive on bandages. How can I get my skin back to normal?

Three weeks ago I had surgery and was bandaged for a couple of days. Had a reaction to the adhesive and was extremely itchy and had a bumpy red rash. What to do when adhesive from bandages causes the skin to be stretched out and irritated?

I got a few moles removed last week. One was on the groove of the inner thigh, right by the bikini line. I have to remove the bandage and replace it daily, but the adhesive from the bandages has really irritated my skin, causing it to be red, irritated, and it looks like some parts of the skin have been stretched out. Due to the area it's in, and the wound left behind from the mole being removed, I can't use a mere band-aid because it won't stay, and if it comes off, the wound will hurt ten times as much, so I need to use the heavy duty dressings that stay on. Yet, due to how badly it hurts, I've resorted to using a band-aid tonight, but since the area rubs against skin every time I take a step, I highly doubt the band-aid will stay on tomorrow, or even through the night while I'm asleep. Is there any way to tend to the irritated skin? And just to be a little clearer, it's the skin around the wound, where the adhesive of the dressing was, that is irritated, not the wound itself. What to do when adhesive from bandages causes the skin to be stretched out and irritated?
When I was 20 years old, (many, many years ago), I suddenly developed an allergy to adhesives. They caused itching, redness and skin irritation in the area where they were applied.

One would think that over the years BandAids, surgical and medicated tapes, etc. would have evolved to be ALL hypo-allergenic. I recently learned the hard way that is not the case at all.

I suggest purchasing a new package of dressings that says hypo-allergenic somewhere on the package, or ask your Pharmacist for a recommendation. Also, if you can handle it, you might leave off the dressings at night so as to allow your skin to recover from the irritation. What to do when adhesive from bandages causes the skin to be stretched out and irritated?
try to stop useing bandaids, and instead, get some gause, and just wrap it around your leg and tape it over the gause. if it doesnt stay, then take some stright and tie it to your under ware. also put some anitbacterial onitment on the irritated skin. if u ever deside to use a bandaid aigan...leave it on when you take a shower so that the water can help remove it, and keeping getting it wet and soapy, i dont kno if they make this forr sure...but look in the store for some bandide remover. =D also exersize and lotion will help tighten up the skin.

I need to understand why my skin has been discolored from bandage adhesive?

The brand name is Curad. I can't understand it. I started putting on Eucerin, hoping it would clear up but it is still there. It looks like a scar in the shape and size of the adhesive from my bandage. The only thing I can think of is that I had to keep a bandage over the same spot for about 2-3 weeks, so I would change it every day. Now I have a permanent mark!I need to understand why my skin has been discolored from bandage adhesive?

Are there any ingredients found in bandage adhesive that are also in chocolate?

We discovered that our daughter is allergic to chocolate because she broke out in hives anywhere chocolate icing touched her skin on her first birthday.

Last week, she needed a band aid for a scrape on her arm. When we removed the bandage, she had the same rash where the adhesive was stuck to her skin as the rash she got with chocolate.

Are there any similar ingredients in these two things, or does she just show the same allergy signs to both products? Are there any ingredients found in bandage adhesive that are also in chocolate?
gluten?? maybe they use gluten in the bandaids.... i know they use it in stamps.....;0)

  • Does anyone else think that adhesive bandages (e.g. Band-Aids) are hard to open?

especially when you're standing there dripping blood out of a cut!

couldn't they design a better way to open these $%$^#^ things?Does anyone else think that adhesive bandages (e.g. Band-Aids) are hard to open?
I know, I agree. We just need longer tabs!Does anyone else think that adhesive bandages (e.g. Band-Aids) are hard to open?
I totally agree..If you are alone when you need to use one of the damned thing it gets covered in blood before its even in place..

But it isn't just band-aids...Mars Bars.Crisps etc..so many of these things I now have to use scissors to open...child proof containers too...bleach bottles I feel are rather dangerous I have to battle so long to open them I get afraid I may spill some..
Finally I know I am not alone! Thank you.
That is your million dollar idea, my friend. Invent a new way to package bandages!
As far as I am concerned, everything is harder to open. You need scissors, a hack saw, dynamite, and maybe a jack hammer to get chit out of packaging.
yes they are.. but in my opinion.. the least expensive brands are even harder to open.. when i was in school.. it was hard opening them.. when u are not supposed to touch the actual pad part to cover an injection area..
especially with a cut on your finger
Yes, and there's always a fair amount of cursing to compliment the struggle to open the darn thing.
If you are in a rush yes but otherwise no.
lol! yes I know exactly what you mean!
Ohhh and don't let it be your finger that needs the band aid and you have no one to help you.

Then you try to use the uninjured hand and your teeth, that does not work!

    The should perforate the edges.

I thought I was just me!

And whats up with encasing things in that plastic then sealing the edges.

That's how a sliced my finger and realized that the dang band aid took an engineer degree to open with.
Yes, I find that very annoying. I have torn through many band-aids before being able to get one on my wound; and, yes, I have lost a lot of blood in the process.
    Not really
Yes, it's true. I hate those crappy bandages.
Yeah, you'll bleed to death trying to open the band-aid package. That's the reason I use duct tape. Duct tape stays on too!

    Adhesive Bandages(Band aids)...?

For a while know I've known I'm allergic to adhesive bandages, from trial and error I've figured it's most likely the adhesive itself(I know I'm not allergic to latex) so I was wondering if anyone here knew the most common adhesives used in adhesive bandages?

(And what substitute hypoalergenic bandaids use?)Adhesive Bandages(Band aids)...?
I'm allergic to most adhesives also. I have found the stronger the adhesive the worse it is.

I usually make my own bandages and just make them to wrap around the areas keeping skin contact to a minimal amount if not any contact at all.

Some hospitals are banning band-aids altogether now.

Here is a good article discussing allergic reactions to adhesives.

I do not know if you are having problems, simply use super glue....seriosuly hold the wound together and put a strip of super glue. We always used this especially in quick wrestling matches!
    Good question

I avoid using band-aids etc, and use a bandage for wounds, taking care to avoid the adhesive coming into contact with my skin.

I am a First Aid instructor, so usually will mention how to deal with those who have band-aid allergies, especially if asked.

How do you remove bandage adhesive residue left on the skin after removal?

I still have a bandage there that's not allowed to get wet, but it's smaller than the first and there is gross sticky grotty stuff left behind on my skin from the previous bandage!

How can I get rid of the stuff without doing anything bad to the one currently there? How do you remove bandage adhesive residue left on the skin after removal?
Alcohol on a cotton ball will work wonders. How do you remove bandage adhesive residue left on the skin after removal?
You got the three options below in the other responses

Try one after the other but the rubbing alcohol will work because you will most likely have that at home.
Try some vegetable oil. Then wash off the mess with soap and water. The others work too, but vegetable oil won't sting if it gets into an open wound.
Acetone or nail polish remover will also work.

What is the signeficance of the adhesive bandage ';Band-aid Brand'; ?

This is NO joke I need a answer that is completely right! Just to make sure, can you add a resource(s) if desired! What is the signeficance of the adhesive bandage ';Band-aid Brand'; ?
I believe the significance is that band-aid brand adhesive bandages were the first ones. Which is why most people refer to them as band-aids (not ';adhesive bandages';) even when the band-aid in question is not band-aid brand.

For adhesive bandages (Band-Aid etc) in india, is having a medicated pad a must or a legal requirement?

    no, not really .

Sudden possible allergic reaction to adhesive bandages.?

I was cooking dinner four nights ago and burned my stomach all the way across by accidently leaning into a hot baking pan. The burn began to pus, peel, and bleed randomly. Today it was much better after I've kept neosporin and peroxide on it. However, A painful and disgusting looking rash formed where the bandaids were placed. It itches something fierce and is only where the outterparts of the bandaids were placed. Everytime I put a bandage on, it itches more. I have never had such reactions to bandaids. Help?!Sudden possible allergic reaction to adhesive bandages.?

I had something similar happen to me. I had never had a reaction to band-aids before.

I had to have a band-aid on my breast. It became very itchy. When I took the band-aid off, It was gross, It pulled off the skin directly under the band-aid I had a band-aid shaped wound for a while.

It healed up with no scar. But i never had a reaction again.

I think it might have something to do with the skin being softer on your stomach.

I'm not a doctor but I hope my story helped in some way (or not - I just wanted to tell it).
    Hi

Youll need to either use a clear plastic film for burns or bandaids that are hypo-allergenic which isnt as harsh on the skin
Allergies can form as our bodies change over time, plus it could be the brand, but you might need to have it looked at. That burn sounds pretty darn serious. My dad is allergic the adhesive bandages his doctor gave him for a cancerous place he had taken off, but he can wear regular bandages from the store just fine, so I would think you are just having an allergic reaction. Honey, you NEED to see the doctor about it all though, so he can get you straight and feeling better.
you may be allergic to latex. check the packaging for the bandages and see if they contain latex. if so, try latex-free ones for a while, but be sure not to put more adhesive on the already irritated areas.

What is the difference between adhesive plastic and fabric bandages?

What is the difference between adhesive and fabric bandages? Besides from the material they are made from, which should be used in which situations? What is the difference between adhesive plastic and fabric bandages?
The fabric ones are good on areas that bend and move because they will move and not become unstuck! Plastic bandaids come off to easy! The fabric ones are great anytime especially if you are active! What is the difference between adhesive plastic and fabric bandages?
Many of the so called band aids (plastic) brands won't stick to a hairy surface. Being one of those hairy persons, I almost always have to use the fabric type.

Is there a difference between sterile and adhesive bandages?

Sterile bandages are designed and packaged to insure that the injury pad is and remains sterile. The design also allows for application of the bandage to remain sterile during the application itself.

Adheasive bandages are more for protective reason of wounds that have partially healed and don't necessarily need the injury pad to be sterile.

here's a tip. When applying a sterile band-aid, open the individual package then keeping the injury pad facing downward, peal back the adhesive protector to expose the injury pad, place the pad over the injury site and then pull the protector strips off allowing the adheives panels to attach to the skin. Keeping the injury pad covered until contact to the injury and keeping it facing downward will keep it sterile until applied.

Hope this helps and good luck!Is there a difference between sterile and adhesive bandages?
There is no connection between the two. Adhesive bandages are sterile, its not an and/or situation. Is there a difference between sterile and adhesive bandages?
Sterile bandages have been packaged to be germ free to prevent possible infections.
generally nothing.. adhesive bandages are using sterile as well. I would need more info on the two products you are comparing to know for sure.
Sterile means germ-free. Adhesive indicates the bandage has tape or some other substance that makes it stick, such as bandaids. Both types of bandages are available for purchase.
The difference is big because there is nothing to compare between then. Sterile means, manufactured, packed, placed while sterile and clean. Adhesive is an addition to most bandages allowing them to stick correctly contouring the injury.

They are both essential for any good bandage, but some parts of the body does not allow adhesives that's why some are not of that type.
    sterile means no germs

    adhesive means sticky

they have nothing to do with each other.

A lot of these products are made from latex. Look for the non latex bandages and that should be able to help you. If you're not able to find this, then look for some gauze that doesn't have latex in it.
are you allergic to latex? Band-Aid brand adhesive bandages contain latex. It's not hard to find alternative ones.

there are plastic bandages, or many different types of material. if this does not work put a cotton ball on and use tape.
non latex super glue. Or go to Walgreen's and buy that liquid skin stuff for cuts and burns.
maybe some olive or coconut oil or aloe or colloidal silver

    use gauze in the future

What do you like and dislike about adhesive bandages(bandaids) in your own opinion...?

I am doing a project on which adhesive bandage is the best and why out of the three brands: Curad, Band-aid, and Nexcare. In general, what do you like and dislike about the adhesive bandages you use? If you use of the brands given, please tell me. Thanks! What do you like and dislike about adhesive bandages(bandaids) in your own opinion...?
I don't like Curad the most - they're kind of made really cheaply and don't stick as well. And I don't like the materials they use to make them with. I like the Band-Aid ones, especially the ones infused with silver or other antibiotic stuff. Nexcare, I like the variety they have for kids. My daughter likes the tattoo ones, but they tend to stick to themselves and then the whole thing is scrapped. I do also use their spray on bandage for small scrapes. What do you like and dislike about adhesive bandages(bandaids) in your own opinion...?
I don't really like Band-Aid brand because it sticks too much and then it hurts to take off. However the good part about it is that it has an included antibiotic on it...which keeps the wound disinfected and covered.
